MSN has an excellent article about customer service. Focused on the computer, mobile phone, and banking industries specifically, the article's points are valid for any industry.

Perhaps the key issue in the entire article is in the middle of page 2 where the author calls Sprint to task for the "common mistake of treating this aspect of customer service as a "project, not process"." Commitment to customer service has to be a long term, on-going part of the company culture rather than one department's goal for the quarter.
