What happened to honest, committed, tries, gives a darn about what they are doing? There are more – but are those the only categories you could come up with.

(5) Susan says:

Responsive. Whether it’s what I want to hear or what needs to be done – be responsive to the needs of your company and the needs of the willing worker. It drives me crazy when you ask a question, make a suggestion – and no response.

(6) Richard thompson says:

In my opinion, the signs of a good boss is a person who is fair right the way accross the team. A good listener, and good judge of character.

A person who is flexible, but demanding. The person has to be a leader at all times and accept accountability and responsibility for his team at all time.

I want to work for a boss who is an inspiring leader… one who sets clear goals and knows how to motivate us to achieve it. Meaningful recognition is a critical component, as is the courage to deal with poor performance and/or behavior.

I want to work for a boss who is courageous enough to be honest, fair and direct, committed to our mission, sets clear goals and direction, and communicates and motivates with humor and integrity.

(12) Kate says:

A good boss will be open minded, and available to listen. Not someone who has their mind made up before all the facts are in. A good boss is one that will allow you the freedom to do your job and not stand over your shoulder to make sure it is done. A good employee will be one who will not give a good boss a reason to do any of these things.

(13) Judith says:

A good boss will look at all sides of an issue before making a judgement call rather than believe the first person who comes to them. They should have good communication skills, problem solving skills, delegate assignments, offer support as needed to get the job done and nurture teamwork.

(17) Zack says:

I think if a manager is “respected”, it means a lot. It means they treat people like people, are honest, do their job and stand by the right thing. Many bosses are like and are liked, but don’t respect and are respected.

(18) John says:

Three very important things come to mind when considering the “traits” most desired in a manager BY their employees/staff. First, these traits may NOT be the same for THEIR supervisor–and managers must pay close attention to those considerations. Second, consistency seems to be a major concern–particularly consistency in the direction that is both fair and consensually goal-oriented. Finally, employees must have (or at least be in the process of developing) trust in their managers.

communicate clearly! communicate clearly! communicate clearly!
The needed mantra for all leaders.
