Groundhog Job Shadow Day
Monday January 24, 2005
Wednesday, February 2, is the ninth annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day. This excellent program gives students a realistic exposure to working at a real job. Colin Powell was head of America's Promise when that organization started Groundhog Job Shadow Day. That he remains active today, despite the time commitments of his current job as US Secretary of State, is testimony to the value he places on this program. Now that he is leaving the government again, I expect to see him even more involved in the program.
For a small investment of your time, you can make a real difference in the life of a student. You can show them that business managers are not all like the pointy-haired boss in Dilbert. Start small, if you have to - just sign up to be a mentor yourself. Next year, you'll probably want to get your entire company involved. All the information you need is on the Groundhog Job Shadow Day web site. You've got a over a week. That's enough time if you do it right now. It's important work, but it's also fun. I've done it seven times. Next month will be eight.
