Skandia International did a survey recently in 13 countries, asking people what income they felt they would need to feel "really happy". The average was an annual salary of $161,000 and varied by country. The US was not included so you may have to extrapolate.
Interestingly, the survey reports that the people in countries who require the highest salaries to feel happy also had the highest debt levels.
