Stand Up At Your Job To Stand Out

Many studies have been done that show sitting at your desk for eight hours a day is bad for your health. One guy I know has programmed an alert into his Outlook calendar to remind him just to stand up for a few moments every two hours. Some companies have gone further by providing their workers desks that can be elevated to let the work choose to work standing or sitting and to change hem at will. Here's a recent story about one such trial of working while standing.

It's not for everyone, but I have always enjoyed being able to choose whether I wanted to work standing up or sitting down. Typically, I'd start the day standing up - until my coffee took hold. In all, I averaged about 75% standing and 25% sitting during the time at my desk. Meetings are a whole different issue. If you have the opportunity, try it. If you can extend the option to your workers, you'll find them more productive. Whether they choose to work standing, sitting, or a combination they will appreciate your interest in them.

I have been standing on and off for about 5 months. I agree that sitting all day is not healthy, standing all day is no picnic. If you work in retail, you don’t have a choice, but most office workers sit out of habit. Standing desks can help IF you can rotate between sitting and standing. And it has to fit into your current work space, not in place of it. A balance of sitting, standing, and walking throughout the day is the key. My setup allows this.
