Good Management Is Predictive Not Reactive

Many managers believe that their job is to resolve problems when they arise. While that is true, it is only the lesser part of the job. It's more importantly that a manager learn how to prevent problems. This is the difference between reactive management, which solves problems as they occur, and predictive management, which tries to prevent many problems from arising in the first place. Very true, prediction allows you to avoid problems not just react to them after they happen. But another big advantage of prediction is learning. Dr. Deming said management is prediction because you cannot make successful make choices about what actions to pursue without predicting the impact of those choices.

The importance of the learning gained by actually making predictions and examining the results is lost on most – but it is a huge advantage to those that practice and learn.
