Sam's Employee Handbook
Monday January 28, 2008
According to Molly Selvin of the Los Angeles Times, billionaire Sam Zell has created an employee handbook that reflects his own personality more than the typical handbook. For example, the opening reads:
"Rule #1: Use your best judgment."
"Rule #2: See Rule 1."
"Rule #1: Use your best judgment."
"Rule #2: See Rule 1."
While a company's handbook needs to reflect its company culture, some question whether Zell has gone too far, whether this document is legally enforceable. Read the article for yourself, at the link above, then click the comments link below.

Zell’s handbook’s success, like martial arts fighting, operates on the ridiculous assumption that people are going to fight fair. I’ve dealt with employees that looked for ways to get out of working and sought to manipulate the workplace instead of performing, regardless of how much their input was valued, or how satisfied they were.
