However, if you're looking for a mentor to help you climb the corporate ladder, you need someone as a mentor who is above you in the organizational structure. That person can be a single level above you, but it is usually more valuable if they are several steps up the ladder. A Vice President, for example, won't have any issues helping someone get promoted from manager to director, but is less likely to help that person get promoted from director to vice president.
