Employee Motivation Is Key

Thursday April 29, 2004
Today I had a very interesting conversation. One of the senior employees working for my client announced his resignation effective at the end of the month. I took him aside later to find out why my client was losing such a talented individual. His reply shocked me, but it didn't surprise me - he feels the company doesn't appreciate him; that he is just a number to them.

Employee motivation is such an important part of what we do as managers. It is hard for me to believe sometimes how difficult some company cultures make that task. Here's an example from my personal experience: Larry Doesn't Work Here Anymore

I completely understand this very common yet over seen issue in the work place.. I have been at my job for almost a year and even though I have gone above and beyond for my company as a reguler employee I am starting to feel unapreciated, and have contemplated putting in my two weeks notice, managers really need to remember that not only are we employees of a company but we are also people; and on that note, happy employees are not only reliable, productive employees but they last alot longer!!

I can understand your position; however sometimes a company makes a decision to move an employee out of their comfort zone because they currently do not have a position for them with the way the current market is; however the thought process could be, that when things pick up the individual will be moved into a position that better suites his/her abilities therefore the company will also benefits. This sometimes does not get explained to the employee in fear of creating favoritism.
