US Employees Push Back Against Increasing Hours

Monday December 22, 2003
American workers are working more and enjoying it less. The sense of always being at work, a combination of longer hours and the technology that facilitates work away from the office, is causing many worker to rethink their life goals. While the current soft economy has motivated those who still have jobs to sacrifice more of their leisure time in hopes of keeping their jobs, the pendulum is beginning to swing. A combination of an improving economy and a backlash against employers' lack of appreciation for the workers' sacrifices is beginning to show.

This USA article reports that annual output per worker in the US surpassed that of Europe and Japan for the first time in over 50 years. However, many believe that the increased productivity is due to unreported extra hours of work outside the workplace, while traveling or at home. Technology like cell phones and laptop computers isn't making workers more productive so much as it is extending the hours they can work.
