Tuesday October 21, 2003
Our Management Glossary now contains over 100 terms, including job enrichment and job enlargement. There is a big difference between them. Could you explain that difference to an employee? Check the glossary.

rhynz_emogirl,

Did you read the two definitions in the glossary? http://management.about.com/library/blanks/blglossary.htm

If so and you still aren’t clear, tell me your industry and your role (i.e. support engineer at a hospital, hr assistant at a bank, etc.) and I’ll try to clarify it for you.

Diana,

I can’t tell you anything about that specific company, but see if this helps you understand the difference between the two terms.

A customer service rep (CSR) takes phone calls from customers related to the company’s Product A. If the individual was allowed to also start taking calls for Product B, that would be job enlargement – a horizantal expansion of the job duties to keep the worker motivated.

If the majority of the calls were from customers who didn’t understand how to do things with Product A, the CSR could be assigned to work with the training department to identify and implement changes to the user manual and training guides to reduce some of this type of call. That would be job enrichment – a vertical expansion of the job to make work more challenging and rewarding.

There certainly cannot be a better way of distinguishing between Job enlargement and Job enrichment than you did.
Through the example that you have used, you have helped me to understand management issues that have been giving me torrid times for a long time. Keep it up please.
